North Burnett Flood Resilience Projects

North burnett Flood Reslience Projects

Flooding in the North Burnett

The North Burnett region has experienced a fair share of flooding over the years and floods cause more damage in Queensland than any other natural hazard.

The Burnett River is located in the Wide Bay – Burnett region and has a catchment area approximately 33,000 square kilometres. Major flooding in the Burnett Catchment is relatively infrequent, however, under favourable meteorological conditions, heavy rainfalls can result in significant floods. These floods can cause considerable impacts to townships and rural areas along the Burnett River and its tributaries impacting homes, infrastructure and agricultural land.

Flood Reslience Projects

In late 2023, the Queensland Government and the Queensland Reconstruction Authority announced more than $18 million in funding for a range of flood study and resilience projects under the Queensland Reconstruction Authority’s Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

North Burnett Regional Council (Council) was successful in receiving funding to undertake multiple projects to increase flood risk awareness and to help communities prepare for, respond to and recover from flood events.  Neighbouring Councils and Non-government organisations have also received funding to deliver projects in the North Burnett region.

Projects underway in the North Burnett include the Burnett and Tributaries Catchment Flood Study, Community Flood Action Plans and Big Map.

Burnett and Tributaries Catchment Flood Study (Flood Study)

The Burnett Catchment Council’s Working Group (comprising Bundaberg Regional, North Burnett Regional, South Burnett Regional, Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire, and Gympie Regional Councils) is working to deliver the Flood Study.

The purpose of the Flood Study is to provide a better understanding of flood behaviour throughout the Burnett River catchment which, in the future, will be used to improve flood management and response, and provide up-to-date information for land-use and infrastructure planning.

The Flood Study will be carried out over the next two years and the community will be invited to share their knowledge and experiences related to floods in the North Burnett throughout the Flood Study project.

Your input is vital to the success of this project

The success of this project requires residents, organisations and agencies to share your experiences and local knowledge of flooding with us.  This includes documentation, records and anecdotal stories.

Community Flood Action Plans (Plans)

North Burnett Regional Council received funding to develop Community Flood Action Plans for  Biggenden, Eidsvold, Gayndah, Monto, Mount Perry and Mundubbera (including the surrounding localities).

The Plans will increase flood awareness in the community by developing a trigger-based action plan the community can use before and during a flood event. These triggers will be based on local impacts and infrastructure important to each community.  The Plans will help the Local Disaster Management Group provide messaging and warnings about impacts which are important and relevant to the local community.

Preparation of the Plans will be carried out over the next 18 months and the community will be invited to share their knowledge and experiences related to floods to help inform the development of these Plans.

Big Map - Disaster Relief Australia and Red Earth Community Foundation

Big Map exercises are a key community resilience activity. They play a pivotal role in identifying potential risks and hazards within a community and provide solutions to help build local resilience. The Big Map is a visual device (giant floor map) created by Disaster Relief Australia’s Geographic Information Systems GIS specialists. The Big Map exercise is an opportunity for a community to gather and work together to identify risks, share experiences, and discuss ways we as a community can better prepare ourselves for all hazard events that may occur in the future.

Big Map sessions will take place in Biggenden, Monto and Mundubbera and are being delivered by Disaster Relief Australia in partnership with Red Earth Community Foundation as part of the Disaster Resilient: Future Ready program. Residents from across the region are welcome to attend a Big Map Community session in Biggenden, Monto and Mundubbera.

Your Involvement

Council would like to hear from you about your experiences with floods. Information you can share includes:

  • Flood marks (images or information about where flood water or debris reached)
  • Photos
  • Videos
