The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has recently completed construction of the new John Peterson Bridge, which also necessitated the re-alignment of Mundubbera Durong Road. Following the re-alignment, a segment of the former Mundubbera Durong Road alignment has been transferred to North Burnett Regional Council to manage as the Road Manager. This transition necessitates the need for a new name for this section of road.
Council is considering using the names Bourke Road, in recognition of a family that is believed to have been associated with the region for a number of years, or Boyne Road, due to the road’s proximity to the Boyne River. However, prior to making a final decision, Council would like to seek community input to the naming process. In seeking input, Council asks the community to be mindful of a number of road naming rules and protocols that need to be followed. These include:
- Single word road names, as these are easier to convey in times of emergencies.
- Unique road names for the reason, as duplicate road names can delay emergency response times if the wrong locality is selected.
- Road names that will not cause offense.
Council’s road naming policy would support road naming suggestions that reflect:
- Indigenous names inspired by local fauna, flora, and geographical features.
- Names of early local settlers, pioneers, explorers, inventors, other esteemed local figures or even members of the Royal Family.
- Themed names, such as ships or bushrangers, reflecting the area’s heritage.
- Names associated with local landmarks or distinctive features.
- Thematic names, including flora and fauna.
To participate, community members are invited to propose potential names and provide a brief statement explaining why they believe the name is fitting for this road section.
