Council is delivering a safer Gayndah-Mount Perry Road
Funding from the Queensland Government’s Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS) will help North Burnett Regional Council deliver a 1.6-kilometre upgrade to the Gayndah Mount Perry Road at Mingo. The works will widen and seal an approximately 1.6-kilometre section of road to a two-lane standard. Some targeted sections will be realigned to reduce some curves to improve safety for all motorists. The new road surface will improve driving conditions and reduce the need for ongoing maintenance.
Works have commenced and are expected to be completed towards the end of the year. Council will continue to advocate for further State Government funding to continue the upgrade of the Gayndah-Mount Perry Road in future budgets.
Council acknowledges and thanks the Department of Transport and Main Roads for their commitment to road improvement projects in regional Queensland, and entrusting Council with the delivery of the project. Such projects allow Council to improve local infrastructure while also supporting the local economy and employment opportunities.
Council advises motorists that work will generally be undertaken Monday through Friday, from 6am to 6pm. Traffic control will be in place for the duration of the project; therefore, residents and road users should plan to allow extra time when travelling. Council appreciates road users’ patience throughout the construction period.
Completion of approach rehabilitation and preparation for deck arrival on the Bon Accord Bridge project
Stage 1 of the bridge approach rehabilitation has been completed on-site at the Bon Accord Bridge by a local contractor. This work has allowed the bridge contractor to access the bridge and undertake substructure rehabilitation and fixing installation to support the new deck.
Work is currently underway to procure for stage 2 of the approach work. This work will include concrete batter protection, signage and line-marking, clearing, and installation of the bridge approach slabs. It will allow the remaining rehabilitation to be undertaken in parallel with the bridge installation.
The bridge contractor is planning to mobilise resources to the site next week, with the installation of the deck units scheduled to begin shortly thereafter. The second shipment of bridge deck units is currently in transit to the port and will be delivered to the site promptly upon arrival to allow for the continuation of installation in mid-July.
Council appreciates the inconvenience caused by the closure and is working closely with the project team to deliver the refurbished bridge. This project is partly funded through the Queensland Reconstruction Authority.
Interim Chief Executive Officer Appointment
Following a special meeting of Council on June 12, 2024, Council appointed Mr. Craig Matheson as Interim Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Matheson will commence his appointment on July 8, 2024. Council is excited to have Mr. Matheson on board, bringing his wealth of local government experience to the position.
Mr. Matheson is a well-rounded and experienced local government professional, and Council looks forward to his commencement as Interim CEO. Council wishes to extend a thanks to Ms. Scott for her dedication as acting CEO and extend that thanks to all managers and staff for their continued support through a pivotal time, particularly as the budget is developed.
Ms. Scott will remain acting CEO until Mr. Matheson’s commencement.
Roof Replacement – Reservoir 1, Monto Water Treatment Plant
Council recently completed the roof replacement of Reservoir 1 at the Monto Water Treatment Plant. The project involved the safe removal and disposal of the original asbestos roof sheeting, repairs to the roof support structure, as well as the supply and installation of new roof sheeting and an access platform. A local building contractor undertook the project, which was completed on time and within budget. The completion of this project will allow for improved water quality, security and asset condition, and represents environmental benefit due to the safe removal and disposal of asbestos. This project was proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s 2021-24 Works for Queensland program in association with North Burnett Regional Council.
Councillor Activities
Deputy Mayor Cr Jones, Cr Vaughan, and Cr McGilvery recently attended the LGAQ’s Civic Leaders Summit. The Civic Leaders Summit is an opportunity for Queensland local government mayors, councillors, and executive and senior officers to come together to share ideas, network, and hear from industry partners. Council representatives heard from a large range of speakers, participated in workshops, and facilitated peer discussions. These types of events are invaluable for those that attend; they build relationships, provide solutions, and ensure that our region is kept up-to-date with best-practice knowledge, industry information, and services.
