Council wishes to remind residents that magpies may become territorial and swoop during spring and early summer as they protect their nests and young. While this behaviour is a natural part of their breeding season, it can sometimes be concerning for pedestrians, cyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts.
To stay safe:
- Avoid known swooping areas: If possible, take an alternate route.
- Stay calm and move on: Avoid running or waving arms, as sudden movements may provoke further swooping.
- Protect yourself: Wear a broad-brimmed hat or carry an umbrella. Cyclists should dismount and walk and consider attaching flag poles or cable ties to helmets.
- Travel in groups: Magpies are less likely to swoop on groups of people.
- Do not feed or provoke magpies: This can increase territorial behaviour.
If you encounter a swooping magpie, please report the location to Council via our website, email admin@northburnett.qld.gov.au or call 1300 696 272 so that we can monitor hotspots and take appropriate action to ensure community safety.
Let’s respect our wildlife and share the environment responsibly.
