Bon Accord Bridge Project Update July 2024
Four spans completed on Bon Accord Bridge: Site visit by key stakeholders
The bridge contractor for the Bon Accord Bridge project has now completed four spans of the Bon Accord Bridge, marking a significant milestone in the project’s progress. The construction team is now mobilising to the Gayndah site to complete the remaining six spans.
On July 10, 2024, key stakeholders, including Councillors, the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA), the project team, bridge designers, and the construction team, attended a site visit at the structure. During the visit, the construction team presented the work undertaken to date and explained the installation process. The designers highlighted the advanced technology and benefits integrated into the new bridge deck design, featuring a lower side profile that enhances resilience during overtopping conditions and flood events.
Stage 2 of the approach work has seen a minor redesign to improve visibility and flood resilience, which has slightly delayed procurement. However, it is expected to be released to the market in the coming week, allowing the remaining rehabilitation to be undertaken in parallel with the bridge installation. This work will include concrete batter protection, signage and line-marking, clearing, and the installation of bridge approach slabs. The project aims to enhance the approaches and improve resilience during flooding events.
Council engaged McMurtie Consulting Engineers to commission a qualified and independent engineering company for a road safety audit of the approaches. HIG has since been engaged by McMurtie Consulting Engineers to conduct the audit, and Council expects to receive the audit findings in early August.
Council appreciates the inconvenience caused by the bridge closure and is working closely with the project team to deliver the refurbished bridge. This project is partly funded through the Queensland Reconstruction Authority.
