Council has recently undertaken safety upgrades in Meson Street, Gayndah, between St Joseph’s and Gayndah State School. The upgrades include the relocation of the pedestrian crossing and the reconfiguration of line markings to meet the required safety standard for school zones and crossings. Council and the design engineers held a consultation meeting with the affected school principals approximately 18 months ago. From this consultation, a considerable number of changes were made to the preliminary designs to preserve parking where possible while also meeting the required safety and design standards.
Unfortunately, a net total of eight parking spaces in Meson Street were lost in order to meet the necessary safety standards, which included the requirement for a safety buffer to the rear of angle parking to facilitate safe entry and exit for parked vehicles. In mitigating the impact of this for parents and teachers, the approved plans provided nine new car parks in Queen Street and highlighted opportunities for off-street staff carparking.
Council acknowledges the inconvenience that the net loss of parking in Meson Street may have caused. In this instance, to meet school zone and crossing safety standards, the loss was unavoidable. For the safety of children, parents, and teachers, we kindly ask that motorists observe and adhere to all line markings and updated signage.
Council apologises for any community concerns or inconvenience and thanks residents for their understanding.
