This week’s highlight was the Australia Day Awards Ceremony, which was held at Mt Perry on Saturday, 5 March.  This was the first time that we have held a combined ceremony to present awards for each community together. Councillors and those who attended the ceremony in person and online were privileged to honour and acknowledge community members and groups for their extraordinary achievements and contributions to the North Burnett community. These wonderful people dedicate their talents and volunteer their time to help make our region what it is, without asking for anything in return, and for that, we can all be grateful. A full list of Australia Day Award winners is available on our website.  It’s not too early to start thinking about next year’s Award Winners either!

Council has received 35 applicants for the Chief Executive Officer position, with six applicants being shortlisted for interviews.  We hope to have the CEO position filled within six weeks, with the successful candidate already living in, or relocating to the region.  The CEO position is one of over 20 career opportunities that is currently being recruited by the organisation, for a full list of vacancies, please visit our website.

Our staff and Councillors have been working through Council’s 2022/2023 Budget.  Councillors are currently reviewing the draft capital works budget.  This is a process of performing a balancing act to decide what asset maintenance looks like for the coming year, which includes prioritising some projects over others.  Council is set to adopt the 2022/2023 Budget in June.

On Wednesday, 9 March Council will join with support services at Dallarnil for a Flood Recovery Session.  This session has been organised by BIEDO as a place for residents and ratepayers to seek advice and support directly from agencies such as Services Australia, Rural Aid, QRIDA, DAF and Rural Financial Counselling Services to name a few.  Support doesn’t stop here though, please keep talking to one another and get in touch with organisations such as BIEDO or North Burnett Community Service, who can put you in touch with people who can support you through this difficult time. See more information here: North Burnett Regional Council – Flood Recovery Session – Dallarnil + Support Information

The by-election for the Division 2 seat previously held by myself will take place via postal vote, with all votes to be completed by 6pm Saturday 26 March 2022.  For all enquiries, please contact the Electoral Commission of Queensland Returning Officer – Wayne Gormley on 0458 430 364 or Wayne.Gormley@elections.qld.gov.au.

Councillors will be in Monto on Wednesday, 23 March for our monthly general meeting. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me or your divisional councillor if you would like to address any concerns.  Our contact details can be found on Council’s website www.northburnett.qld.gov.au/meet-your-councillors.
