Heritage Day and Tom Lynn Collection, Monto

Monto Heritage Day held on Sunday 2 October provided a fascinating look into the history of Monto and surrounding region. Adults and children alike enjoyed the damper morning tea and sausage sizzle lunch, as well as all the noise and excitement that came with firing up the forge, gold stamper and old machinery. There were demonstrations of traditional skills and crafts, many interesting displays, and a cake stall. Visitors also participated in the opening of the Tom Lynn collection of cut, polished and faceted stone, gathered from around the North Burnett and from overseas, displayed in the historical display and art space.

Monto Silver Buckle and Mundubbera Golden Stirrup Campdrafts

Mundubbera’s Golden Stirrup Campdraft held from Friday 23 through to Sunday 25 September was a great success. Congratulations to the competitors who travelled far and wide to support this event, and to the dedicated team of volunteers and committee members who brought the event together. Likewise, the Monto Silver Buckle Campdraft held Friday, 30 September, through to Sunday, 2 October 2022 was well attended by local competitors and competitors from beyond the region.  Monto experienced perfect weather for the drafting action. Highlights of the three-day event were the Helmsman’s Auction on Saturday afternoon, the Restricted Open Campdraft Shoot Out and live entertainment by performer, Lisa Sutton.

Police Request for Vigilance Around Theft Prevention

Bundaberg Police Officer, Meg Ryan recently spoke with me regarding incidences of theft in the region and requested a reminder for residents about the importance being vigilant and securing personal property. To help prevent theft, ensure doors are always locked with a key, possessions are locked away, vehicles are locked with keys stored inconspicuously somewhere in the home – even while you are at home.  Consider installing an intruder alarm or camera system as well as perimeter security lighting with sensor lights. Educate yourself about the risk of theft in your area using the Queensland Police Service online map www.police.qld.gov.au/maps-and-statistics and consider becoming a member of your local Neighbourhood Watch Committee, information can be found here www.nhwq.org.

 Eidsvold Races

The Eidsvold Races held on 2 October brought colour, excitement, and pageantry to the North Burnett. Thanks are due to the Eidsvold Race Club as well as the generosity of many local sponsors, including individual families, local companies and organisations.  The efforts of volunteers who helped with preparations during lead up to the event and clean-up following the event are also much appreciated.

Mt Perry News

On Saturday 8 October 2022, Mt Perry came alive with visitors and locals being treated to the spectacle of a sparkling array of cars and motorcycles on display, hosted by the Mt Perry Car and Bike Club at their annual show. A traditional presentation of dance was warmly received from the Wan’di People who performed a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony. Adult and junior competitors showed off their skills in the Pub Chop wood chop events. Visitors enjoyed the outback and beach-themed works of Zac the Artist, on display at the Art Gallery, hosted by The Mt Perry Arts Group Inc. The weekly Crop Swapping group also gathered, to share garden tips, cuttings, seeds, fruit, vegetables and salad greens.

John Elliott Exhibition

The opening of the John Elliott exhibition ‘Gifted Country’ which expresses the artist’s respect for country music from the past, was held on Saturday 8 October 2022 at the Regional Murray Williams Australian Bush Learning Centre. We were also very fortunate to have country music singer Dean Perrett entertain us with his latest music. The exhibition will be on display at the Centre until 30 November 2022.
