There was a great turn out of over 60 people at the free morning tea organised by the Biggenden Chamber of Commerce on Thursday 8 June 2023, with representatives from a broad range of services and community organisations giving helpful information about the work they do in the community. There were speakers from Council, SES, Rural Fire Service, Biggenden Hospital, Wellways Carer Gateway, Biggenden Lions Club, RSL, PCYC Cadets, the Biggenden Hospital Community Reference Group, Wide Bay Burnett – Fraser Coast Regional Community Forum, the Biggenden Hospital Auxiliary, Biggenden Women’s Shed, Biggenden Bowls Club, Dallarnil Sports Club, Meals on Wheels, Biggenden Men’s Shed, Senior Citizens, Garden Club, the local Bushwalking Club and more.
Many of the groups who rely on the support of volunteers to help keep their vital work going, made appeals for new volunteers to join the ranks, asking attendees to spread the word amongst their friends and families. A Council Communities staff member provided information about the wide scope of work that Council does for the community and reminded attendees about using the Snap Send Solve app for non-urgent work, as well as the 1300 696 272 number for 24-hour support.

Rural Financial Support
With the trend toward drier conditions throughout winter, it is important that primary producers consider their level of drought readiness and consider strategies they can employ to be better drought prepared. Financial support is available from the Queensland Rural and Industry Development Authority (QRIDA), to help producers shore up their farm business for adverse seasonal changes. QRIDA delivers drought grants and loans, with new drought programs focused on fostering greater preparedness and business resilience for a broader range of eligible Queensland primary producers. Information is available on the QRIDA website.
Producers with a livestock business can also check their eligibility for Farm Business Resilience Planning support from Rural Financial Counselling Service Southern Queensland, which provides free, impartial and confidential farm business resilience counselling. Further details can be found on their website.
