Road Safety is Council’s Priority

Recent community questions about safety of North Burnett roads prompted me to write a response regarding this important topic.

Council proactively undertakes regular road inspections across the road network to ensure defects that potentially cause harm to road users are identified and mitigated by either repair or appropriate warning signage. Along with regular inspections, Council commissions road safety audits and investigations to provide clear recommendations for safety improvements.

North Burnett Regional Council, like many other rural Councils, only has a limited rate base and, as such, relies heavily on external funding programs to assist with significant costs associated with road safety upgrades.

Despite being a relatively small Council, North Burnett Regional Council are network stewards on the state network throughout the region, under the Road Maintenance Performance Contract with the Department of Transport and Main Roads.  Managing the state network from a maintenance perspective gives greater insight and input into targeted safety upgrades, which often ensure the state invests funding towards the highest priority projects across the region.

Council continues to invest in design for projects targeting road safety improvements so that when funding programs become available, Council can confidently apply for funding with confidence that the outcomes can be achieved within the program’s scope.

BIEDO Connectivity Roadshow
These last two weeks you may have noticed the pink Telstra vans in the main streets of your township. Councillors made a visit to the van in various towns earlier this month to meet the hard-working team, providing information regarding digital services in the region. I hope you were able to access the information which was provided. Mobile services such as these are vital for people living in rural areas, particularly those who do not have the opportunity to travel to major urban areas on a regular basis.
