Keeping Local Government Local – Weekly Update, 18 August 2022

Aug 18, 2022 | Mayor Hotz Update

Issue of Rates Notices

Property owners should have received their rates notices via email or mail by now.  If you have not received your notice, please contact Council: 1300 696 272. Property owners will have noticed an increase overall rates.  Councillors debated and decided on these changes during the 2022/23 Budget process, and believed we have delivered a considerate rise, despite a sharp increase in the organisation’s operating costs.

Councillors and management dedicated a lot of time and energy to develop a responsible budget that will work towards the end goal of Council sustainability.

At the budget meeting held in June, with these factors in mind, Councillors adopted to increase general rates and utility charges (including water, sewage and cleansing) by 5% across the board.  This increase equates to an average of $300 per annum, or the price of a weekly take away coffee.

Council has also experienced the impact of unpredictable weather events throughout 2021/2022 which has increased the operational costs of the disaster management. Disaster management obligations equate to $42 per rateable household.  However, Council has only increased the levy from $6, to $15 per rateable household.

Throughout the budget decision-making process, our goal was to seek a balance between ensuring we have necessary funding to continue delivering essential services, while limiting the financial impact for ratepayers. The challenge of rising costs means that we had to make some tough decisions and absorb some of these expenses through our rates.

The reality is that it is has become much more expensive to carry out our day-to-day operations, but we are committed to working towards being more efficient and finding innovative ways of delivering essential services for our community and ensuring Council sustainability.
