International Volunteer Day 5 December 2023

Today, 5 December, is International Volunteer Day 2023. Volunteers across the North Burnett give their time, effort, and skills to better our society.

This year, the theme is recognising the power of collective action: if everyone did. If everyone volunteered, the world would be a better place. On International Volunteers Day, and every day, let’s remember that if everyone did just a little bit, we can all make a positive impact and help each other out.

Every year, Volunteering QLD comes together to celebrate some of the volunteers who go above and beyond to keep their communities running. If you know an outstanding volunteer who deserve recognition and celebration, nominate them for a Queensland Volunteering Award. Find all the categories and nomination information online here: https://volunteeringqld.org.au/

Bon Accord Bridge, Gayndah – December Update

The rehabilitation of the Bon Accord Bridge project is on track, with the bridge sub-structure remediation being completed in November. This work included repairs, reinstatement, cleaning and applying a protective coating to the existing concrete substructure.

Planning and approvals are underway to allow the demolition contractor to start deconstruction of the bridge deck in early 2024. This work will include sorting the damaged timbers and keeping suitable components for future use by Council.

Preliminary designs have been received and reviewed for the approach construction works. Council looks forward to achieving a detailed design that delivers a betterment project to restore a more resilient structure for the community during flood events. Once designs are finalised, Council will seek tenders for a suitable construction contractor to rehabilitate both approaches, which will include earthworks, concrete works, rock stabilisation and bitumen sealing components. This works is planned to follow the deconstruction of the bridge deck to allow removal of debris and improve access around the abutments.

Council appreciates the inconvenience caused by the closure and is working closely with the project team to deliver the refurbished bridge.
