“You’re holding someone’s thoughts in your hands”- Seinileva Huakau. Letters are a unique form of communication that may be a dying art. They are an intimate piece of expression in a world full of instant connections. Communication comes is so many forms- in person, over the phone and most popularly through social media engagement. Now our mailboxes are only for bills, specials catalogues and the odd ‘vote 1’ pamphlets. Letters seems a thing of the past, though there is something special about a handwritten letter, the personality and emotion of the writer. It’s a unique piece of art made just for you, a window in time of the life of the sender. ‘Love Letters’ was created by artists living in regional Queensland, and regional and metropolitan New South Wales. The exhibition of collaborative work was developed through a letter exchange program in response to border closures, social isolation and the loneliness experienced during COVID-19 restrictions. Each exchange embraced an old fashioned way of connecting. Letters were handwritten and crafted by the artists making each letter a piece of art.   Mundubbera Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) presents: “Sacrifice” a photographic exhibition by William Debois, from 13 May to 1 July 2023. William Debois is a French / Australian photographer currently based in Gladstone, Queensland since 2013. His photographic career spans over 25 years already and 4 different countries. The exhibition of 35 portrait photography and oral histories presents individuals and highlights contemporary social issues through the personal and often powerful stories of universal notions of generosity, hardship, community, commitment, privilege and inequality. Since early 2021, William Debois has been photographing strangers met through recommendations or by chance. In this creative and personal process, the sitter is photographed on film, in front of a backdrop custom-made for the project, and is asked to share their reflections on the two questions: WHAT DOES SACRIFICE MEAN TO YOU? WHAT SACRIFICE HAVE YOU MADE? “Sacrifice” reflects the universal notion of sacrifice, be it big or small, life-affirming or limiting, tragic or slightly trivial.
